Who is this for?
This workshop has been designed particularly for psychologists, therapists, social workers, group facilitators who use an ACT framework in their work and are interested in exploring and learning creative ways to expand their ability to improvise and try new approaches.
Jen and NeLi met through their love of and involvement with Playback Theatre. Playback is an interactive theatre approach used in over 60 countries as a tool for community engagement, trauma response and conflict transformation. In a playback event, audience members share their own personal stories and then watch as a team of actors, and musicians transform these accounts into improvised theatre pieces. It’s a great defusion tool in it’s own right. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-UtiROCm6E
Improvisation requires skills in being present, listening deeply, noticing our thoughts and feelings, saying “yes and…”, taking risks and committing to action. These skills are integral to valued and creative therapeutic interventions.
In this is experiential workshop you will participate in simple improvisation processes and activities including those we have adapted specifically for running ACT groups. Time will be given for reflective learning so you can consider how you can implement these skills in both group and individual therapy. We have found improvisation skills helpful, as practitioners, to develop our capacity to notice and defuse our hooks. This frees spontaneity, and our ability to take valued risks and connect with others. We trust you’ll find the same.
Jen is a registered psychologist who for over twenty five years has worked privately as a group and story facilitator and trainer running a variety of groups that combine creative active processes with skill development. Her focus is on creating safe, inclusive spaces for all people to share and learn from their stories and experiences. For over ten years she has been a regular Vipassana meditator and was excited when she first encountered ACT in 2013 and has since integrated this into her group and counselling work. She is a founding member of Red Thread Stories Inc which uses Playback Theatre, to enable people’s real life stories and experiences to be improvised in the moment. She is practicing being more mindful and light hearted in her work and life. She works in circles not rows! Jen has been involved in Playback theatre as actor, conductor and artistic director over 23 years; 19 years with Brisbane Playback and 5 years with Red Thread Stories. More on Jen.
NeLi first registered as a psychologist in Qld in 1991 and has worked in child protection, juvenile justice, domestic violence and organisational settings; she is currently in private practice in Brisbane and Noosa. Her love affair with ACT started in 2007 and FAP in 2012. Contextual Behavioural Science makes sense and integrates with her many years of Buddhist Dharma mindfulness study and practice together with Yoga Teaching and practice. She is very interested in how the science of mindfulness can be applied in the Western world and continues to look for ways to integrate it into her life. She is also delighted to invite others into this dance of awareness. She has been practicing yoga since 1992 and teaching since 1998. She has also been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2000 and teaching since 2005. NeLi became involved in Brisbane Playback Theatre in 2007 when she saw the potential of the work to be a defusion tool. She was an actor in the troupe for 5 years. She has been a 5 rhythms dance practitioner since 2000; exploring embodied freedom through movement. NeLi has recently started teaching Yoga Trance Dance. More on NeLi.
Jen and NeLi have collaborated in running ACT groups utilising improvisation processes and activities. They offered this workshop at the 2015 ACBS conference in Wellington, NZ.
